Yavapai County was formed just one year after the Arizona Territory was formed in September 1864. It was one of the 4 original territorial counties. Yavapai comes from the Yavapai Indian Tribe, which means the "hill people."
The territorial capital was first located in the county of Prescott. When other counties were created five of them were carved out of Yavapai County including Apache, Coconino, Gila, Maricopa and Navajo.
Size: 8,125 square miles.
Elevation: ranges from 1,900 feet in the desert to about 8,000 feet in the mountains.
All of Arizona is on Mountain Standard Time - year round even when other parts of the country go on daylight savings time.
