There is, along the Northern California coastline about 300 miles north of San Francisco one of California’s secret spots, the City of Eureka. The city is bordered on the west by the beautiful Humboldt Bay, and on the east by mountains lush with giant redwood trees.

A variety of cultural opportunities are in Eureka, including active artists, and theater groups. Outdoor recreation is everywhere, such as boating, sport fishing, kayaking, hunting, birding and backpacking and a great place for camping, all close by.

There are 14 departments in the City of Eureka organizational structure. The responsibility for the operation of each department is assigned to a Department Director appointed by the City Manager, with the exception of the City Clerk and the City Attorney, who are appointed by the City Council.
City Council meetings are held in the Council Chambers on the 2nd floor of Eureka City Hall at 531 K Street, Eureka.

Old City Crime

On February 5 and February 6, 1885, Eureka's whole Chinese population of about 300 men and 20 women were expelled after a gunfight between rival Chinese gangs resulted in the wounding of a 12 year old boy and the death of Eureka City Councilman, 56 year old David Kendall. After the shooting, an angry mob of 600 Eurekans met and then told the Chinese that they were no longer wanted in Eureka and would be hanged if they were to stay in town longer than 3 p.m. the next day. They were put on 2 steamships and sent to San Francisco. No-one was killed and noone was arrested in the expulsion.
